Longitudinal wave attenuation measurements by means of a diffraction-insensitive large-aperture PVDF hydrophone

The concept of inspection qualification has been developed over the past decades to enhance the effectiveness of inspections, which is a key issue for a reliable assessment of the integrity of the inspected parts. Among the physical parameters characterising the interaction of the ultrasound field with its supporting medium, attenuation is an important input parameter for computer simulation-based inspection qualifications. The experimental estimation of the attenuation has been addressed in many studies, but the accuracy with which the intrinsic attenuation is measured can be surprisingly poor. Several approaches have been developed to overcome the problem experimentally, but the data acquisition is cumbersome and dedicated software tools are required to carry out the measurements. The present work proposes a new approach to address these issues by using a diffraction-insensitive large-aperture PVDF hydrophone. The effectiveness and validity of the approach is demonstrated.
