Abstract: This report makes a review of historic emission control regulation from road vehicles in Europe, including conventional air pollutants and greenhouse gases. It then links these historic phases with new and upcoming regulations. The emission regulations have largely dictated the emission control technologies which are used in today’s vehicles. Based on this, the report makes an outline of which are the new vehicle technologies and, based on literature values, suggests emission factors that can be used for urban, rural, and highway driving. The report ends with an assessment of the remaining environmental problems and the uncertainties related to the emission factors proposed.
