Research for safe nuclear waste management options
In Europe spent nuclear fuel discharged from light water reactors (LWR) is considered either as waste or as recyclable material. Whatever the fate of the spent fuel is, a safe final disposal of high level nuclear waste is a mandatory task of the EU Member States. In this context different waste management options are under consideration and supporting research activities are conducted worldwide. At the Joint Research Centre - Institute for Transuranium Elements (JRC-ITU) research activities address safety aspects of direct spent fuel disposal in a geological repository as well as of partitioning and transmutation (P&T) options.
