Verification of the applicability of EN 1785:2003 for the detection of irradiation treatment of cashew nuts and nutmeg

The applicability of the international standard method of analysis EN 1785:2003 "Detection of irradiated food containing fat - Gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric analysis of 2-alkylcyclobutanones." for cashew nuts and nutmeg was investigated and verified for irradiation doses larger than lkGy. A novel method, capable of detecting doses larger than 100 Gy, was developed and validated. 40 test samples from the EU market did not show any indication for irradiation.
