La valutazione dei servizi ecosistemi per la pianificazione territoriale. Esperienze in Europa
The aim of this contribution is twofold. First, an overview of recent and ongoing European research projects on ecosystem service modelling and assessment in support of spatial planning is provided. Subsequently, the main results of the recently concluded FP7 project VOLANTE (Vision of Land Use Transitions in Europe) are presented and discussed. The project aimed to envisage future land use scenarios in Europe and, inter alia, to evaluate them in terms of supply of a wide array of ecosystem services. Models were developed and implemented at the European scale to assess the level and spatial distribution of ecosystem services supplied as well as to identify hotspots and trade-offs in different landscape configurations. Results can be used to inform policy-making about the environmental (and related socioeconomic) implications of different land use policies.
