In European forestry, one essential, although not yet available information, was the distribution of the forest tree species in the European wide territory. This first Atlas of Forest Tree Species of Europe aims at providing this essential information for regular citizens, researchers and politicians, as it is key when taking decisions in our daily life e.g. regarding protection of high nature value areas, forest management, selection of adequate species for afforestation and/or adaptation measures to climate change.
The compilation of data and information to elaborate the current Atlas has been enormous, and it has required the collaboration with national forest services and international institutions dealing with different aspects of botanical sciences, soils, biodiversity, vegetation, pests, etc.
