The European Digital Single Market. Its role in economic activity in the EU
The European Digital Single Market (DSM) has become a priority for the European Commission. However, little evidence about it exists to understand the functioning of such a market or even to inform policy makers. Since its emergence in the mid 90's, electronic commerce (e-commerce) has been escalating as a commercialisation channel. The rapid penetration of e-commerce has been generating growing concerns in the policy dimension. However, the absence of appropriate data on the volume and relevance of electronic markets is obstructing policy decision making. Despite research efforts from both academics and public institutions, as of today, we only have partial pictures of the whole Internet economy.
This report aims to shed some light on the evolution and the current situation of e-commerce in the European Union (EU). In particular, we revise its role in economic activity more generally and particularly, in trade across different Member States (MS).
