The dynamics of the Earth’s covering biomass, or standing biomass, is a good expression of the general level of the potential to supply, or keep on supplying, ecosystem services. Assessing vegetative cover dynamics approximates a measure for general productivity levels of the land’s
human-environment system. Land-productivity reflects climatic constraints, the overall quality of the land, the efficiency of using the land and other resources and it indirectly indicates the level at which these resources are appropriated for human use, i.e. land used for intensive/extensive agriculture, grazing, forestry or urban areas. Hence, land-productivity dynamics might indicate levels of lost or sustai
ned land-quality and may aid in land degradation assessments.
