Change and convergence of income distributions in the European Union during 2007-2014
JRC Working Papers in Economics and Finance 2019/13
Relying on the adapted statistical framework suggested by Szekely and Rizzo (2004) and going beyond the usual comparison of gross domestic product or average/median income, we characterize the changes and convergence of net equivalized income distributions among European Union countries. We exploit the scale-independence property of proper inequality metrics to evaluate not only the total, but also the inequality-affecting (shape-influenced) convergence of distributions. The established findings obtained using the proposed framework are consistent with simple evidence derived from relative quantiles and distributions.
