Striving for Zero Hunger - Linking Food and Nutrition Security Metrics and Analysis for Enhanced Policy Action
Food and nutrition security (FNS) is the foundation of a decent life. And FNS has been improving for much of the century. For example, the State of Food Insecurity in the World2015 found that for developing regions as a whole, the share of undernourished people in the total population has decreased from 23.3 percent in 1990–92 to 12.9 percent (FAO-IFAD-WFP, 2015). However, in the last couple of years that progress has stagnated, and there remain over 800 million people undernourished globally (FAO, 2018).Several factors play a role; for example, that natural and human-induced disasters or political instability have resulted in protracted crises with increased vulnerability and food insecurity among millions of people. Moreover, multiple factors put additional stress on FNS in many parts of the world, including erratic rainfall patterns, land degradation, climate variability, price volatility, socio-economic and gender inequalities and the lack of essential infrastructure and services.
