Determination of the content of vitamin D3 in poultry compound feed
EURL-FA Control Proficiency Test Report FAC-20/01
The European Union Reference Laboratory for Feed Additives Control (EURL-FA Control) organised a proficiency testing round (PT) for the determination of the content of vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol in poultry compound feed to support the implementation of Regulation (EU) 2017/625, the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/1492 concerning the authorisation of cholecalciferol as a feed additive for all animal species, amended by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/849. This proficiency testing round was open to National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) and to official feed control laboratories (OCLs).
The test item used in this round was produced by the JRC. The purchased commercial poultry compound feed was proven to be a blank material for the target analyte. It was further milled, ground and spiked with the feed additive preparation containing authorised vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol, identification number 3a671, at declared level.
The assigned values was calculated from the formulation taking into account the certificate of analysis of the feed additive, and the water content of the final materials. The homogeneity of the test items was evaluated before dispatching to the participants, while the stability was assessed after the reporting of results deadline, according to the requirements set by the ISO 13528:2015.
Fourteen NRLs and three OCLs from 11 EU Member States and Switzerland registered to the exercise and reported results.
Laboratory results were rated using z’ and ζ (zeta) performance scores in accordance with ISO 13528:2015. The relative standard deviation for proficiency assessment (σpt) was set to 25 % of the assigned value, based on the reproducibility standard deviations determined during validation studies.
The majority of participants (82 %) showed satisfactory performance (according to the z’ score), which confirms the ability of most participating NRLs in monitoring the maximum levels set by the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/1492 concerning vitamin D3 in poultry feed.
