Market Analysis on Label Information: Alcoholic Drinks in the EU
Even though Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 includes the obligation to provide the list of ingredients and nutrition declaration, there is an exemption for alcoholic beverages containing more than 1.2% alcohol by volume. One of the actions in the field of prevention in Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan includes the proposal, published before the end of 2022, of mandatory labelling of ingredients and nutrient content on alcoholic beverages.
The objective of this study is to assess the presence of nutritional and ingredients information (list of ingredients and full nutrition declaration/only energy content) on alcoholic beverages across EU MS.
To do so, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) requested Euromonitor International to assess the number/share of SKUs displaying (1) ingredients, (2) energy content only, and (3) nutritional information on the label of alcoholic products divided in 5 categories: Spirits, Beers, Ready-to-Drink products, wine products, and cider/perry. The assessment was done via store checks in the 27 EU Member States. Market shares of the products presenting ingredient and nutritional information were also provided for 24 EU Member States.
Euromonitor International provided a report including the aggregated data analysis by subcategory and by total products, as well as per MS.
