One of the key priorities on the policy agenda in Europe is the development and consecutive implementation of the European strategy for data. It aims to build a single data market by establishing a common European data space made up of domain-specific data spaces in strategic sectors such as the environment, agriculture, industry, health and transportation. The challenges and strategies required to combine heterogeneous data sources to satisfy the requirements of different stakeholders, such as academia, businesses, public sector authorities and citizens, with their different interests and points of view, necessarily involve bringing them together and actively engaging them in the process of data-driven innovation that is in line with societal values. The papers included in this special issue cover some particularly important and cross-cutting issues that need to be addressed if the foreseen European data space is to ultimately become a reality.
