The Role of Deadwood in the European Green Deal
Deadwood (DW) plays a critical role in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem resilience, as well as other critical forest ecosystem processes, such as nutrient and carbon cycling and forest fires yet the terminology and estimates of DW vary considerably across Europe. There is therefore a need to harmonize data and monitoring to inform decision makers and guide potential uses.
In the context of climate change, natural disturbances (fire, insects, wind, and drought) are likely to increase the amount of dead wood. Understanding the interactions between climate change and natural disturbances is critical to developing DW adaptive management strategies. Salvage logging is increasing in European forests, with many negative impacts on the amount and quality of DW. Retention benchmarks and removal thresholds of DW tailored to local forest conditions are needed to balance healthy and functioning ecosystems with other biomass uses and values.
