This short perspective article focuses on EU circular economy policy as a lever for open strategic autonomy and sustainable development. It provides insight into the circularity status quo for the strategic technologies identified by the Critical Raw Materials Act, and puts forward relevant reflections to inform future research and innovation (R&I) on the subject.
