Harmonised Standards for the European AI Act

cover
The European Union adopted the AI Act in August 2024, and the provisions for high-risk AI systems will start to apply after a transition period of 2 or 3 years. European harmonised standards for the AI Act, provided they are published in the Official Journal of the EU, will grant a legal presumption of conformity to AI systems developed in accordance with them. European standardisation organisations, led by CEN and CENELEC, are in the process of drafting the necessary AI standards, following a request from the European Commission. This brief discusses some of the key characteristics expected from upcoming standards that would support the implementation of the AI Act.
