Launch of the European Quality Assurance Scheme for Breast Cancer Services
The European Quality Assurance Scheme for Breast Cancer Services, officially launched in February 4, 2025 by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), is a voluntary certification scheme developed under the European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer (ECIBC). It aims to support the improvement and harmonisation of breast cancer care across the EU by defining a common framework of 64 evidence-based requirements covering the entire care pathway, from screening to supportive care. The scheme’s development involved a multidisciplinary panel of experts, including clinicians, researchers, and patient representatives, and underwent extensive testing by 20 entities, including breast cancer services, certification bodies, and National Accreditation Bodies across nine EU countries. Endorsed by the European co-operation for Accreditation (EA), it provides a structured approach to continuous quality improvement in breast cancer services and is now publicly available for implementation.
