The world demand of olive oil is expanding, and will grow faster in developed countries, driven by health and taste concerns. These prospects, strengthened by expected GATT and Euro-Mediterranean trade dynamics, could be crucial for the sustainable development in the Mediterranean basin, where the majority of world olive oil is produced and consumed, being a basic income for about two millions of families in southern EU, fairly seven in all the Mediterranean countries.
