Implementation of the MCPFE Indicator "Forest Spatial Pattern" to Report on European Forest Biodiversity
Monitoring and reporting on the status and evolution of European forest biodiversity has become one of the key components of the European Union’s policy on Environment and Sustainable Development. For a European level application remote sensing based approaches offer the natural way to assess forest spatial pattern. Changes of forest cover and spatial pattern are quantified using Landsat images for year 1987 and 2000. Image segmentation is used to create the single-date forest – non-forest maps. These are then an input into post-classification change detection and computation of forest spatial patterns classes: core, patch, edge and perforated. The assessment of spatial forest pattern trends is then discussed.
