This study aims to provide an overview of existing approaches and results concerning characterisation and typologies of rural areas for territorial/spatial impact assessment of policies, showing pros and cons of approaches to rural typologies in respect to territorial socio-economic modelling. The study is based on existing literature and methodologies on rural typologies to draw recommendation for an approach to be selected in further research. This study must be seen as a previous step towards establishing of rural typlogies. In the future research of JRC-IPTS rural typology will be used in conjunction with a socio-economic model for territorial impact assessment of the rural development policy defined in the RDR EC 1698/2005 and its successors.
