Following a request of DG RELEX in April 2008 to support the planning of the EU mission to Darfur the partners of the Cluster Humanitarian Relief & Recon-struction of the GMES-Project LIMES joint their expertise to support these activities by providing satellite based maps and information. For three villages that were burnt down by militias early 2008 detailed damage assessments maps were provided. Beyond this, analysis of the evolution of two large IDP camps was carried out focussing on the growth and density of the population within the camps and the surrounding villages. Rapid mapping techniques adapted to the complex humanitarian situation were applied for analysing the effects of raids on three villages in West Darfur and for monitoring of the evolution of the IDP camps between 2002 and 2008. In addition, the impact of the camps on the surrounding environment was analysed using low-resolution MODIS time series (2000 to 2008).
