Performance of Liquid Li17Pb83 on Air and with Insulating Structure
TESTS WERE PERFORMED WITH LI AND VARIOUS LI-PB ALLOYS WITH RESPECT TO THEIR BEHAVIOUR IN AIR AND IN COMBINATION WITH DESIGN MATERIALS OF THE FUSION REACTOR AT HIGH TEMPERATURE. THE MAIN AIM WAS TO STUDY THE BEHAVIOUR OF LI17PB83 FROM THE PLANT OPERATION SAFETY POINT OF VIEW. REPEATING TESTS SHOWED REPRODUCIBILITY OF RESULTS FOR LI17PB83 AND LI50PB50 UP TO ABOUT 450 DEGREES C IN AIR AND IN COMBINATION WITH DIFFERENT MATERIALS FOR THERMAL INSULATION. AT ABOUT 800 DEGREES C, LI50PB50 SHOWED SOME SLOW REACTION WITH QUARTZ AND MAGNESIUM-CALCIUM-OXIDE BASE MATERIALS, WHEREAS THE REACTION OF LI17PB83 IS STILL NEGLIGIBLE. AS FAR AS LI AND LI7PB2 ARE CONCERNED, WHEN THEY ARE HEATED ABOVE THEIR MELTING POINT, MODERATE REACTIONS WERE OBSERVED IN STAINLESS STEEL CONTAINERS.
