Socioeconomic Impact of Genetically Modified Crops in EU Agriculture: An Innovation from Modern Biotechnology

cover
This disseration ex post analyses the economic impact of the first GM crop introduced in the European Union, as well as the factors that have shaped its adoption by Spanish farmers. It also estimates ex ante the potential adoption of other GM crops not authorised for cultivation in the EU but widely introduced elsewhere. This is done under two coexistence scenarios (absence of and established regulated coexistence). Additionally, this dissertation includes a Chapter that sets GM crops within other biotechnology derived products in general and agro-food sector in particular. This Chapter is based on findings of the ¿Biotechnology for Europe¿ study (BIO4EU), an European Parliament request to the JRC-IPTS that assesses modern biotechnology applications and their consequences, opportunities and challenges for Europe in terms of economic, social and environmental aspects.
