Abstract: WE BRIEFLY REVIEW THE ACCIDENTS THAT GAVE RISE TO THE SEVESO DIRECTIVE AND SHAPED ITS CONTENT AND THEN SUMMARISES THE INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS. THE STATUS OF ITS IMPLEMENTATION AND INTERPRETATION IS DISCUSSED, E.G. PRACTICES IN SAFETY ANALYSIS IN VARIOUS MEMBER STATES, THE PROVISION OF INFORMATION TO MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC AND THE MAJOR ACCIDENT REPORTING SYSTEM (MARS). REGULATORY TRENDS WITH RESPECT TO INFORMATION ON MAJOR HAZARDS ARE IDENTIFIED AS ARE RELATED RESEARCH NEEDS.
