European Policy and Targets for the Production and Utilisation of Biomethane in Europe
Transition to a sustainable energy system will to a large extent involve utilization of biomass, despite the rapid growth of other renewable energies. A large proportion of the biomass is expected to be derived from residues and wastes. Conversion of the wide range of biomass feedstocks to biofuel and bioenergy will require a number of different processes, many of them with flexibility to handle different type of biomass in order to reduce supply risks. This extended abstract summarises the various European Union legislation that has an impact on the expansion of renewable energy in the EU and on biomethane in particular.
